EOG Resources second quarter 2026 earnings explained: oil prices, adjusted EPS and buybacks
EOG Resources earned $2.72 billion, or $5.15 per diluted share, in the quarter ended June 30, 2026, as higher oil prices lifted revenue. Its third quarter results are not out yet.
EOG Resources reported its second quarter 2026 results on August 4, 2026. That is still its latest quarter with full results. The company had not published its third quarter results when this article was written on October 31, 2026. On October 8 it filed only a short update to its third quarter tax guidance, which we cover near the end. The full third quarter report is the next one to watch. [1][2][3]
In the three months ended June 30, 2026 EOG reported net income of $2,724 million, or $5.15 per diluted share. Its adjusted net income was $2,683 million, or $5.07 per share. The main driver against the first quarter was price: its average realized crude oil price rose to $98.15 a barrel from $72.47. This article explains what EOG does, then walks through the quarter, production, cash flow and valuation. Every figure is sourced and dated, and every number worked out by us is labelled as a Dalsna Finance calculation. [1]
EOG in brief
EOG describes itself as one of the largest independent crude oil and natural gas companies in the United States, meaning it explores for and produces oil and gas but does not refine or sell fuel at the pump. It holds proved reserves in the United States and in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. Its shares trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker EOG. The release's chief executive commentary opens: "EOG delivered outstanding second quarter results, including record financial performance." That is the company's own view. [4][1]
EOG sells three products from its wells: crude oil and condensate, natural gas liquids (NGLs) and natural gas. In the first half of 2026 its drilling and completion work was mainly in the Delaware Basin, the Utica and the Eagle Ford, and its major producing areas in the United States are in New Mexico, Texas and Ohio, according to its quarterly report. Its chief executive reviews the major United States producing areas as one operating segment. Outside the United States it produces in Trinidad, and in June 2026 it began producing crude oil in the United Arab Emirates as part of an exploration program there. [4]
EOG also earns gathering, processing and marketing revenue. The quarterly report explains that this comes from selling oil, NGLs and gas bought from third parties, from fees for gathering third party gas and sales of sand that EOG owns. The cost of buying those products is booked as marketing costs, so most of that revenue is offset. In the second quarter the line brought in $2,011 million against marketing costs of $1,950 million. [4][1]
The numbers, quarter over quarter
Total operating revenues and other, EOG's top line, rose to $8,620 million from $6,921 million in the first quarter. Revenue from selling its own oil, NGLs and gas rose to $6,483 million from $5,262 million. Operating income rose to $3,528 million from $2,598 million, and net income to $2,724 million from $1,980 million. Profit margin, profit divided by revenue, is shown below on three bases. [1][4]
EOG breaks down the change in earnings per share from the first quarter to the second. Higher realized prices added $1.57 per share after tax and higher volumes added $0.14. Higher cash operating costs and depreciation per barrel of oil equivalent took away $0.07, smaller mark to market derivative gains took away $0.11 and other items took away $0.08. These are the company's figures. The price, volume and cost items use an imputed tax rate of 22%. [1]
Adjusted net income is EOG's non GAAP measure. It swaps the paper gains and losses on its derivative contracts for the cash actually received or paid when they settle, and removes gains and losses on selling assets and certain impairments and acquisition costs. In the second quarter the adjustments took $41 million off net income after tax: a $40 million mark to market gain and $58 million of gains on asset sales were removed, and $45 million of cash received from derivative settlements was added, all before tax. As reported by EOG, except the three margin rows, the sales revenue total for Q1 (the sum of its oil, NGL and gas lines) and the change columns, which are a Dalsna Finance calculation. Change is Q2 minus Q1, in percentage points for margins. Change (%) is that change divided by Q1, times 100. Both are worked from the figures as filed and rounded only at the end. Change (%) is not meaningful for margins, which are already percentages. [1][4]
Earnings per share
Earnings per share, or EPS, is profit divided by the number of shares. The diluted figure also counts shares that could be created from items such as stock awards. EOG reported diluted EPS of $5.15 for the second quarter and $3.70 for the first. Dividing net income by average diluted shares gives the same figures to the cent (Dalsna Finance calculation). Adjusted EPS, adjusted net income divided by the same shares, was $5.07 and $3.41, as reported. [1]
The average diluted share count fell by six million while EOG kept buying back its own stock. The quarterly report says it repurchased 9,576,509 shares in the second quarter at an average price of $135.13 per share, including commissions and fees. Effective May 20, 2026 the board doubled the buyback authorization to $20 billion, and $11.65 billion of it remained available at June 30, 2026. [4][1]

Production and prices
Production is measured in thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day (MBoed), which counts gas and NGLs alongside oil on one scale, six thousand cubic feet of gas to one barrel. Total production averaged 1,410.4 MBoed in the second quarter, against 1,383.8 MBoed in the first. Oil production was almost flat at 548.8 thousand barrels a day. [1]
Prices moved far more than volumes. EOG's composite realized oil price rose 35.4% from the first quarter, while its realized gas price fell to $2.89 per thousand cubic feet from $3.76 (Dalsna Finance calculation for the percentage). The quarterly report links higher oil prices in the first half, and the higher prices EOG expects for the full year, to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, measured against its expectations at the start of 2026. [1][4]

As reported by EOG in its second quarter 2026 release. Realized prices exclude the effect of derivative contracts. The change columns are a Dalsna Finance calculation, worked as in the table above and rounded at the end. [1]
Cash flow, buybacks and debt
Net cash provided by operating activities was $4,669 million in the second quarter, against $2,966 million in the first. EOG's adjusted cash flow from operations, which leaves out changes in working capital, the cash tied up in items such as receivables and payables, was $4,386 million. Free cash flow, which EOG defines as that adjusted figure minus total capital expenditures, was $2,799 million. [1]
EOG paid $540 million of dividends and $1,299 million for treasury stock in the quarter, according to its cash flow statement. The release puts the return to shareholders at $1.8 billion through the regular dividend and buybacks. Since 2024 EOG has committed to return to stockholders at least 70% of each year's operating cash flow, before certain balance sheet changes, minus total capital expenditures, according to its quarterly report. On August 4, 2026 the board declared a quarterly dividend of $1.02 per share, payable on October 30, 2026 to stockholders of record on October 16, 2026. [1][4]
Total debt was $7,926 million at June 30, 2026 and cash was $4,907 million, so net debt, a non GAAP measure, fell to $3,019 million from $4,082 million at March 31. EOG's debt to total capitalization ratio was 20% at June 30, 2026, and its $3.0 billion revolving credit facility remained undrawn, according to its quarterly report. [1][4]

The last four quarters
Over the four quarters to June 30, 2026 net income added up to $6,876 million and adjusted net income to $7,202 million (Dalsna Finance calculation for the sums). The fourth quarter of 2025 included impairments of $646 million before tax, $506 million after tax, mainly writing down gas and oil assets in the Barnett Shale and the Woodford Oil Window to fair value, according to the release. Adjusted net income adds those back. All four quarters are taken from the second quarter 2026 release. [1]

What the market values EOG at
Market capitalization, or market cap, is what the stock market values the whole company at: the share price times the number of shares. EOG's shares closed at $165.54 on Friday, October 30, 2026, as reported by StockAnalysis. The cover of its second quarter report to the SEC lists 524,529,176 shares of common stock outstanding as of July 28, 2026, its only class of common stock. That gives a market cap of about $86.83 billion (Dalsna Finance calculation). Every multiple and share price below uses this one share count. [5][4]
- Closing price of $165.54 on October 30, 2026, as reported by StockAnalysis
- Times 524,529,176 shares outstanding on July 28, 2026, from the cover of the quarterly report
Market cap of about $86,830.6 million, or about $86.83 billion
Dalsna Finance calculation, rounded at the end. The multiples below divide the unrounded market cap. [5][4]
Six valuation multiples
The price to earnings ratio, or P/E, is market cap divided by a year of earnings. It shows how many dollars the market is paying for each dollar of yearly profit. Annualised means one quarter multiplied by four. Second quarter net income of $2,724 million times 4 is $10,896 million, which gives an annualised P/E of 8.0. The adjusted P/E uses adjusted net income instead: $2,683 million times 4 is $10,732 million, which gives 8.1 (Dalsna Finance calculation). [1][5][4]
A trailing P/E, sometimes called a historical P/E, uses the last four reported quarters. On the $6,876 million of net income in the table above it is 12.6, and on the $7,202 million of adjusted net income it is 12.1 (Dalsna Finance calculation). The trailing GAAP figure is the higher of the two because the fourth quarter of 2025 carried the impairments described above. [1][4][5]
A forward P/E uses an estimate of future earnings. EOG has given guidance on production, capital spending and third quarter taxes but no earnings or EPS guidance in the filings we read, and we did not find a dated analyst consensus published after the second quarter that we could check against its original report. So the two forward P/E values are not calculated. [1][4][2]

Two base cases: the second quarter held flat for a year
Suppose total operating revenues and other stayed at the second quarter's level for a full year, with no growth and no decline: $8,620 million times 4, or $34,480 million. At the second quarter's net margin of 31.6% that gives $10,896 million of net income, or $20.77 per share on the cover share count. At the 31.1% adjusted margin it gives $10,732 million, or $20.46 per share (Dalsna Finance calculation). [1][4]
Both cases are simply the latest quarter annualised, so at the matching annualised P/E each returns the October 30, 2026 close of $165.54 by construction. The other cells only show how the price moves when the same earnings are given a different multiple. Each kind of earnings meets its own kind of multiple. We add no operating margin case: second quarter net income was not lifted by large items below operating income, and adjusted net income already removes the gains EOG quantified. The arithmetic also holds prices fixed, while the NYMEX WTI benchmark, a market price rather than EOG's realized price, averaged $85.68 a barrel in the third quarter, according to EOG's October 8 filing. [1][5][2]

What the October 8 filing says about the third quarter
On October 8, 2026 EOG raised its guidance for current tax expense in the third quarter to $835 million to $935 million, from the $545 million to $645 million it had forecast on August 4. It gives higher realized oil prices in the quarter, and higher prices it expects for the full year because of the conflict in the Middle East, as the reason. These are company forecasts, and EOG said it was not updating or confirming any of its other guidance ranges. [2]
The same filing reports that EOG received net cash of $40 million from settling its financial commodity derivative contracts in the third quarter. It also gives benchmark prices for the quarter: NYMEX WTI crude averaged $85.68 a barrel and NYMEX Henry Hub gas $2.95 per million British thermal units. Those are market benchmarks, not EOG's own realized prices, which the company says differ because of location, quality and other adjustments. [2]
Sector comparison
This table sets the second quarter at EOG beside seven other large US oil and gas companies, using each company's own reported figures for the three months ended June 30, 2026, though integrated companies, producers and refiners earn money in different ways, so margins are not like for like. Each P/E here divides the October 30, 2026 close by four times the quarter's diluted EPS, so it can differ a little from the market cap based P/E earlier in this article. [1][5]

Revenue, net income attributable to the company and diluted EPS are as reported (GAAP) for each company's quarter, in US dollars, with revenue and net income rounded. Close is each stock's closing price on October 30, 2026. Net margin (net income divided by revenue) and P/E (the close divided by four times the quarter's diluted EPS, not meaningful for a loss) are Dalsna Finance calculations. Revenue lines differ by company, as the note under each name says, so margins compare only roughly.
What to watch
The full third quarter report will show whether realized oil prices and net income moved from second quarter levels, and whether EOG kept buying back shares under its $20 billion authorization. For the full year 2026, the quarterly report said EOG expected oil production to rise by about 5% and total production by about 14% against 2025, with capital expenditures of about $6.3 billion to $6.7 billion. Those are company projections, as reported on August 4. [4]
There is also a leadership change ahead. EOG said on September 24, 2026 that its chief financial officer, Ann D. Janssen, has decided to retire, with her last day in that role on December 31, 2026, after which she will be employed as an advisor, and that Jeffrey W. Hibbard, its senior vice president of finance, will become chief financial officer on January 1, 2027. [23]
How these figures were made: inputs come from EOG's second quarter 2026 earnings release and quarterly report and its September 24 and October 8, 2026 filings on SEC EDGAR. The share price is the dated close named above. Calculations use the figures as filed and are rounded only at the end, with percentages and multiples to one decimal, per share figures and prices to the cent. [1][4][2][23][5]
