ExxonMobil third quarter 2026 earnings explained: segments, EPS and valuation multiples
ExxonMobil earned $15,413 million in the quarter ended September 30, 2026, or $17,505 million on its own adjusted basis. Here is how its five reporting lines did and what its EPS and valuation multiples show.
ExxonMobil reported its third quarter 2026 results on October 30, 2026. For the three months ended September 30 its earnings under GAAP, the standard US accounting rules, rose 6.1% from the second quarter to $15,413 million, and its adjusted earnings, a non GAAP measure Exxon reports itself, rose 19.2% to $17,505 million (Dalsna Finance calculation for the changes). Sales fell 3.5% over the same period (Dalsna Finance calculation). This article walks through what the company does, how each part of the business performed and what the numbers say about its valuation. Every figure is sourced and dated, and every number worked out by us is labelled as a Dalsna Finance calculation. [1][2][3]
ExxonMobil in brief
ExxonMobil produces oil and natural gas, refines crude oil into fuels and makes chemical and specialty products. Its parent company is now ExxonMobil Holdings Corporation, a Texas corporation based in Spring, Texas. On July 1, 2026 Exxon Mobil Corporation, a New Jersey corporation, completed what it calls a redomiciliation reorganization, and the Texas company became the publicly traded parent of the group. The quarterly report says the change did not alter the group's consolidated business, operations, assets, liabilities or financial reporting basis. The common stock trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker XOM. [3][1]
In the release chairman and chief executive officer Darren Woods credited advantaged investments, technology and $16.9 billion of structural cost savings since 2019, and said "These are lasting improvements, not simply the result of favorable prices and margins." Structural cost savings are Exxon's own non GAAP estimate of lasting cost cuts measured against 2019. [1]
Five reporting lines
Exxon reports four segments plus a fifth line, Corporate and Financing, for corporate and financing items. Upstream produces crude oil, natural gas liquids, bitumen, synthetic oil and natural gas. Energy Products runs the refineries and sells fuels such as gasoline, diesel, heating oil and aviation fuel. Exxon tracks polyethylene prices as a marker for Chemical Products, and it links Specialty Products earnings to basestock margins. Corporate and Financing was a loss in both quarters. [1][2]
Against the second quarter, Exxon said Upstream earnings fell on lower prices and an accelerated Guyana entitlement impact. Energy Products rose on higher margins and strong operations, including 100% crude unit utilization at its US Gulf Coast refineries, which more than offset outside impacts on its global capacity utilization. Chemical Products fell as margins declined, and Specialty Products rose with higher basestock margins. The industry refining margin marker Exxon tracks rose to $50.3 a barrel from $29.0, while the Brent crude price averaged $97.01 a barrel against $104.52. [1][2]
Adjusted earnings leave out what Exxon calls identified items, individually significant non operational events that typically have a total effect of at least $250 million in a quarter, and estimated timing effects, which are primarily related to marking unsettled derivatives to period end prices before the matching physical shipments reach earnings. In the third quarter identified items added $449 million, made up of a $675 million gain on the sale of assets in Upstream and other items that took away $226 million, and timing effects took away $2,541 million, $1,873 million of it in Energy Products. In the second quarter identified items took away $2,638 million, including $1,079 million of impairments and $1,365 million of additions to financial reserves, and timing effects added $2,483 million. That swing is why Energy Products adjusted earnings more than doubled while its GAAP earnings rose 31.2% (Dalsna Finance calculation). [1]

As reported by ExxonMobil in its third quarter 2026 earnings release. Earnings are ExxonMobil's share, after amounts attributable to noncontrolling interests. Adjusted earnings are non GAAP and exclude identified items and estimated timing effects. [1]
Production and sales volumes
Upstream production averaged 4,496 thousand oil equivalent barrels a day in the third quarter, against 4,514 thousand in the second. Exxon converts natural gas at six million cubic feet to one thousand barrels. Oil and other liquids fell to 3,279 thousand barrels a day from 3,373 thousand, while natural gas available for sale rose to 7,301 million cubic feet a day from 6,849 million. Exxon's volume bridge puts the effect of price, spend and other entitlement changes at a reduction of 87 thousand oil equivalent barrels a day and divestments at 5 thousand, partly offset by 74 thousand from growth and other changes. [1][2]
Refinery throughput rose to 3,735 thousand barrels a day from 3,562 thousand. Exxon said its refining operations set a record so far this year, with its highest global fuels utilization excluding Middle East impacts, measured on its own data going back to 2014. [1][2]
| Volume | Q2 2026 | Q3 2026 | Change | Change (%) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Upstream production (thousand oil equivalent barrels a day) | 4,514 | 4,496 | Down 18 | Down 0.4% |
| Energy Products sales (thousand barrels a day) | 5,698 | 5,753 | Up 55 | Up 1.0% |

| Refinery throughput (thousand barrels a day) | 3,562 | 3,735 | Up 173 | Up 4.9% |
Volumes as reported by ExxonMobil. The two change columns are a Dalsna Finance calculation: Change is Q3 2026 minus Q2 2026, and Change (%) is that change divided by the Q2 2026 figure, times 100, rounded to one decimal at the end. [1][2]
The numbers, quarter over quarter
Sales and other operating revenue were $110,503 million in the third quarter, against $114,529 million in the second. Exxon does not report gross profit or operating income, so this article uses the lines it does report. Income before income taxes rose to $21,236 million from $19,424 million. Earnings attributable to ExxonMobil under GAAP rose to $15,413 million from $14,525 million, and adjusted earnings rose to $17,505 million from $14,680 million. [2][3][1]
Profit margin is earnings as a share of sales. On GAAP earnings it was 13.9% in the third quarter against 12.7% in the second, and on adjusted earnings it was 15.8% against 12.8% (Dalsna Finance calculation: for example $15,413 million divided by $110,503 million). Exxon's effective income tax rate was 26% in the third quarter and 24% in the second, as reported. [2][3][1]
Cash flow from operating activities was $25,650 million and free cash flow, a non GAAP measure Exxon defines as operating cash plus investing cash flows (excluding cash acquired from mergers and acquisitions) plus inflows from noncontrolling interests for major projects, was $19,109 million. Shareholder distributions were $9.4 billion, made up of $4.3 billion of dividends and $5.1 billion of share repurchases. Exxon put net debt at $22.1 billion at September 30, 2026, total debt of $34.3 billion less $12.2 billion of cash, and said it had cut net debt by nearly $11 billion so far this year. [1]
Against the third quarter of 2025, GAAP earnings roughly doubled from $7,548 million and sales rose 32.6% from $83,331 million (Dalsna Finance calculation). [2]
| Measure | Q2 2026 | Q3 2026 | Change | Change (%) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sales and other operating revenue | 114,529 | 110,503 | Down 4,026 | Down 3.5% |
| Total revenues and other income | 116,017 | 113,164 | Down 2,853 | Down 2.5% |

| Cash flow from operating activities | 23,555 | 25,650 | Up 2,095 | Up 8.9% |
| Free cash flow (non GAAP) | 17,236 | 19,109 | Up 1,873 | Up 10.9% |
| Profit margin, GAAP (earnings divided by sales) | 12.7% | 13.9% | Up 1.3 percentage points | Not meaningful |
| Profit margin, adjusted (adjusted earnings divided by sales) | 12.8% | 15.8% | Up 3.0 percentage points | Not meaningful |
| Weighted average diluted shares (millions) | 4,174 | 4,140 | Down 34 | Down 0.8% |
As reported by ExxonMobil, except the margin rows and the change columns, which are a Dalsna Finance calculation. Change is Q3 minus Q2 in the row's unit, in percentage points for margins. Change (%) is Change divided by Q2, times 100. Both use the figures as filed, rounded only at the end. A margin is already a percentage, so its Change (%) is not meaningful. [1][2][3]
Earnings per share
Earnings per share, or EPS, is profit divided by the number of shares. The diluted figure also counts shares that could be created from stock awards. Exxon reported diluted EPS of $3.72 for the third quarter and $3.48 for the second, and adjusted EPS of $4.23 and $3.52. Adjusted EPS uses adjusted earnings in place of GAAP earnings. Dividing each earnings figure by the weighted average diluted share count gives the same figures. [1][2]
The share count fell because Exxon kept buying back stock: shares outstanding were 4,079 million at September 30, 2026 against 4,112 million at June 30, as reported. The quarterly report for the third quarter had not been filed when this article was written, so the valuation below uses the 4,111,911,960 shares on the cover of the second quarter report, which is the latest cover count. A count from the end of September would give a slightly smaller market cap. [2][3]

What the market values ExxonMobil at
Market capitalization, or market cap, is what the stock market values the whole company at: the share price times the number of shares. ExxonMobil's shares closed at $187.25 on Friday, October 30, 2026, the day of the results, as reported by StockAnalysis. Times the 4,111,911,960 cover shares, that gives a market cap of about $770.0 billion (Dalsna Finance calculation). [4][3]

Market cap of about $769,955.5 million, or about $770.0 billion
Dalsna Finance calculation, rounded at the end. The multiples below divide the unrounded market cap. [4][3]
Six valuation multiples
The price to earnings ratio, or P/E, is market cap divided by a year of earnings. It shows how many dollars the market is paying for each dollar of yearly profit. Annualised means one quarter multiplied by four. On GAAP earnings of $15,413 million times 4, or $61,652 million, the annualised P/E is 12.5. On adjusted earnings of $17,505 million times 4, or $70,020 million, the adjusted annualised P/E is 11.0 (Dalsna Finance calculation). [1][4][3]
A forward P/E uses a published estimate of future earnings. MarketBeat reported a consensus estimate of $4.12 per share for the third quarter alone, against which it compared Exxon's adjusted EPS of $4.23, but that covers one quarter, not a year. We did not find a dated full year 2026 earnings estimate, made after the second quarter results, that we could open and check against its source, so this article shows no forward P/E or adjusted forward P/E rather than use an unverified number. [5]
A trailing P/E, sometimes called a historical P/E, uses the last four reported quarters. GAAP earnings over the four quarters to September 30, 2026 add up to $40,622 million and adjusted earnings to $47,877 million, giving a trailing P/E of 19.0 and an adjusted trailing P/E of 16.1 (Dalsna Finance calculation). Both sit above the annualised multiples because the fourth quarter of 2025 and the first quarter of 2026 earned much less. Exxon said first quarter 2026 earnings of $4,183 million included unfavorable estimated timing effects of $3.9 billion and an identified item of $0.7 billion. [1][6][7][4][3]
- Third quarter 2026 GAAP earnings of $15,413 million times 4 is $61,652 million

The last four quarters
Every figure here is as reported by Exxon in one of its earnings releases. The fourth quarter 2025 adjusted figure of $6,920 million comes from the first quarter 2026 release, which shows it on the same basis Exxon uses now, excluding both identified items and estimated timing effects. The second and third quarters of 2026 carried most of the four quarters' earnings. [7][6][1]
| Quarter | GAAP earnings | Adjusted earnings (non GAAP) |
|---|---|---|
| Q4 2025 | 6,501 | 6,920 |
| Q1 2026 | 4,183 | 8,772 |
| Q2 2026 | 14,525 | 14,680 |

As reported by ExxonMobil. Every quarter is reported, none is worked out. The four quarter totals are not charted. [7][6][1]
Two base cases: the third quarter held flat for a year
Suppose sales stayed at the third quarter's level for a full year, with no growth and no decline: $110,503 million times 4, or $442,012 million. The first base case keeps the 13.9% GAAP profit margin, which gives earnings of $61,652 million, or $14.99 per share on the cover share count. This case is simply the latest quarter annualised, so at the annualised P/E it returns the October 30, 2026 close of $187.25 by construction. The other cells only show how the price moves when the same earnings are given a different multiple. [2][1][4][3]
The second base case uses the 15.8% adjusted margin, which leaves out the $675 million asset sale gain, the other identified items and the timing effects in the same way Exxon's own adjusted earnings do: $70,020 million a year, or $17.03 per share. At the adjusted annualised P/E it also returns $187.25 by construction. Exxon does not report operating income, so there is no operating margin case, and we make no adjustment of our own beyond the ones Exxon reports. [1][2][3]
No CEO scenario follows. On the call and in the release Exxon gave no revenue figure for a future year, so there is no management revenue figure to put on the grid. [1][5]

What to watch
Exxon declared a fourth quarter dividend of $1.07 per share, payable on December 10, 2026 to shareholders of record on November 16, against dividends of $1.03 per share for the third quarter, as reported. It also announced $20 billion of share repurchases for 2027, assuming reasonable market conditions (a company plan, as stated in the release). [1][2]
On the call Jim Chapman, vice president of investor relations and treasurer, said Exxon does not plan to hold a formal corporate plan update event in December and will instead reaffirm key 2027 planning metrics in a press release later this quarter, after its board approves this year's plan. Talking about tight fuel markets after the Middle East disruptions, Woods said his guess was that it would take well through next year before markets got closer to normal and that it could take longer (a paraphrase, from MarketBeat's transcript of the October 30, 2026 call). The next report will show how much of the third quarter's refining strength carries into the fourth. [5]
How these figures were made: inputs come from ExxonMobil's earnings releases for the first three quarters of 2026 and its second quarter 2026 quarterly report on SEC EDGAR, plus the dated closing price named above. Calculations use unrounded inputs and are rounded only at the end, with multiples to one decimal and per share figures and prices to the cent. [1][2][6][7][3][4]
