Tesla third quarter 2026 earnings explained: segments, EPS and valuation multiples

Tesla earned $787 million on $28,046 million of revenue in the quarter ended September 30, 2026. Here is how its businesses did, what its GAAP and adjusted EPS look like and what its valuation multiples show.

Tesla reported its third quarter 2026 results on October 21, 2026. Revenue for the three months ended September 30 was almost unchanged from the quarter before, down 0.7% (Dalsna Finance calculation), while operating income rose and GAAP net income fell. This article walks through what Tesla does, how each part of the business performed and what the numbers say about its valuation. Every figure is sourced and dated, and every number worked out by us is labelled as a Dalsna Finance calculation. [1]

Tesla in brief

Tesla, Inc. is best known for its electric cars, and it also sells energy storage, the Megapack and Powerwall batteries. It is building Optimus, a humanoid robot, and runs a Robotaxi service. Its shares trade on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the ticker TSLA. In the third quarter it delivered 486,532 vehicles and produced 464,391, and it deployed 13.7 GWh of energy storage. It said it produced and delivered its 10 millionth vehicle and began giving Robotaxi rides in Cybercabs in Austin on September 3. [1][2]

Two segments, three revenue lines

Tesla reports two segments: automotive, and energy generation and storage. Its income statement splits revenue three ways. Automotive revenue is car sales, mainly the Model 3 and Model Y, plus regulatory credits and vehicle leasing. Services and other is the third line, and the quarterly report counts it inside the automotive segment. Energy generation and storage includes Megapack, which Tesla says is increasingly used to supply large data center loads, and Powerwall. [2][1]

Automotive revenue was $20,560 million, about level with the second quarter. Regulatory credits shrank to $113 million from $146 million. Services and other set a record gross profit of $734 million, $86 million more than in the second quarter, as Tesla reported. Energy revenue fell to $2,881 million from $3,139 million, but its gross profit rose to $954 million. Tesla said battery availability was still the limiting factor on vehicle output, and that it ended the quarter with the largest passenger vehicle backlog in four years. Active FSD (Supervised) subscriptions reached 1.74 million from 1.48 million. By Tesla's count they include upfront purchases as well as monthly subscriptions, and Tesla notes the software needs active driver supervision. [1]

Revenue and total gross profit as reported by Tesla in its third quarter 2026 update. Gross profit for each line is a Dalsna Finance calculation: the line's revenue minus its cost of revenues as reported. The automotive segment is the first two lines together, with third quarter segment gross profit of $4,540 million in the quarterly report. [1][2]

The numbers, quarter over quarter

Revenue was $28,046 million in the third quarter, against $28,236 million in the second. Gross profit, which is revenue minus the direct cost of what was sold, rose 15.6% to $5,494 million. Operating income, which also takes off research, selling and administrative costs, rose to $718 million from $398 million. Net income under GAAP, the standard US accounting rules, fell to $787 million from $1,114 million (Dalsna Finance calculation for both changes). [1]

Profit margin is net income as a share of revenue. It was 2.8% in the third quarter, against 3.9% in the second (Dalsna Finance calculation: $787 million divided by $28,046 million, and $1,114 million divided by $28,236 million). The operating margin, operating income divided by revenue, rose to 2.6% from 1.4%. Operating expenses grew to $4,776 million from $4,353 million, and Tesla said research and development on SI, its name for its artificial intelligence work, and other projects was one reason for the rise from a year earlier. [1]

Net income fell while operating income rose because of items below the operating line. In the second quarter Tesla booked a $1,005 million unrealized gain on its investment in SpaceX, which its quarterly report says is recorded in other income. Unrealized means the stake rose in value but was not sold. In the third quarter the same stake produced a $142 million unrealized loss, and other expense, net, came to $117 million. Tesla also earned $445 million of interest income and recorded a $152 million provision for income taxes. [1][2]

Tesla also reports non GAAP net income, its adjusted measure. It adds back share based pay after tax and takes out unrealized gains and losses on digital assets and on the SpaceX stake, along with certain tax items. It was $1,697 million in the third quarter and $1,153 million in the second. Against the third quarter of 2025, revenue was down 0.2% from $28,095 million and GAAP net income was down 42.7% from $1,373 million (Dalsna Finance calculation). [1]

As reported by Tesla, except the three margin rows and the two change columns, which are a Dalsna Finance calculation. Change is Q3 2026 minus Q2 2026 in the row's own unit, in percentage points for the margin rows. Change (%) is that change divided by the Q2 2026 figure, times 100. Both are worked from the figures as filed and rounded only at the end. Change (%) is not meaningful for the margin rows, which are already percentages. [1]

Earnings per share

Earnings per share, or EPS, is profit divided by the number of shares. The diluted figure also counts shares that could be created from stock options and similar awards. Tesla reported diluted GAAP EPS of $0.22 for the third quarter and $0.32 for the second. Its adjusted EPS, non GAAP net income per diluted share, was $0.48 and $0.33. Dividing the net income Tesla used for EPS by its diluted shares gives the same figures. For the second quarter that net income is $2 million more than the headline figure because of a buyout of a noncontrolling interest, as Tesla shows in its update. [1]

Adjusted EPS is larger than GAAP EPS mainly because it adds back share based pay, $982 million after tax in the third quarter. Paying staff in stock is a real cost to shareholders, because it spreads ownership over more shares, so the two figures answer different questions. [1]

What the market values Tesla at

Market capitalization, or market cap, is what the stock market values the whole company at: the share price times the number of shares. Tesla closed at $399.81 on Friday, October 30, 2026, as reported by StockAnalysis. The cover of its third quarter report to the SEC lists 3,952,757,946 shares of common stock outstanding as of October 15, 2026. That gives a market cap of about $1.58 trillion (Dalsna Finance calculation). Every multiple and share price below uses this one share count. [3][2]

The cover count is higher than the 3,541 million diluted shares used for EPS. The quarterly report says restricted stock awards are left out of the diluted count until they are earned, and the 2025 CEO Performance Award alone is approximately 423.7 million shares of performance based restricted stock. Using the cover count makes the market cap and every multiple below larger than they would be on the EPS share count. [2][1]

Calculation 3: Market cap at the October 30, 2026 close

  • Times 3,952,757,946 shares outstanding on October 15, 2026, from the cover of the quarterly report

Market cap of about $1,580.4 billion, or about $1.58 trillion

Dalsna Finance calculation, rounded at the end. The multiples below divide the unrounded market cap. [3][2]

Six valuation multiples

The price to earnings ratio, or P/E, is market cap divided by a year of earnings. It shows how many dollars the market is paying for each dollar of yearly profit. Annualised means one quarter multiplied by four. On that basis Tesla has a P/E of 502.0 (Dalsna Finance calculation: $1,580.4 billion divided by $787 million times 4, which is $3,148 million). The adjusted P/E uses non GAAP net income instead: $1,697 million times 4 is $6,788 million, which gives 232.8 (Dalsna Finance calculation). [1][3][2]

A forward P/E uses an estimate of future earnings. 24/7 Wall St. reported on October 2, 2026 that analysts expect EPS of $2.2011 for 2027. Multiplying that by the same 3,952,757,946 shares gives estimated earnings of about $8,700 million and a forward P/E of 181.6 (Dalsna Finance calculation on an estimate, analyst consensus as reported by 24/7 Wall St.). The estimate came before the October 21 results, and the report does not say whether it is on a GAAP or adjusted basis. We found only this one estimate, so there is no separate adjusted forward P/E. [4][3][2]

A trailing P/E, sometimes called a historical P/E, uses the last four reported quarters. Tesla's GAAP net income over the twelve months to September 30, 2026 was $3,218 million, which gives a trailing P/E of 491.1. Non GAAP net income over the same four quarters added up to $6,064 million, which gives a trailing adjusted P/E of 260.6 (Dalsna Finance calculation for both). [1][3][2]

Calculation 4: Annualised P/E
  • Third quarter 2026 GAAP net income of $787 million times 4 is $3,148 million

Calculation 5: Annualised adjusted P/E
  • Third quarter 2026 non GAAP net income of $1,697 million times 4 is $6,788 million
  • Market cap of $1,580.4 billion divided by $6,788 million

Three base cases: the third quarter held flat for a year

Suppose revenue stayed at the third quarter's level for a full year, with no growth and no decline: $28,046 million times 4, or $112,184 million. The first base case keeps the reported 2.8% net margin, which gives earnings of $3,148 million, or $0.80 per share on the cover share count. The adjusted case keeps the 6.1% non GAAP margin, which gives $6,788 million, or $1.72 per share. Each is simply the latest quarter annualised, so at its own annualised multiple it returns the October 30, 2026 close of $399.81 by construction. The other cells only show how the price moves when the same earnings are given a different multiple. [1][3][2]

Third quarter net income of $787 million was above operating income of $718 million because of items below the operating line, including $445 million of interest income. Net income also included a $288 million unrealized gain on digital assets and the $142 million unrealized loss on the SpaceX stake. So the third base case uses the 2.6% operating margin, which leaves out interest, taxes and other income altogether: $2,872 million a year, or $0.73 per share. Operating income is counted before tax, so this is not net income. Tesla named tariff related customer refunds as one reason energy revenue fell from a year earlier but gave no figure, so the refunds are only pointed out here and nothing is subtracted for them. [1][2]

The GAAP multiples apply to the two GAAP rows and the adjusted multiples to the adjusted row, so each kind of earnings meets its own kind of multiple. The forward P/E applies to every row, because its estimate does not say which basis it uses. [4]

What to watch

Tesla gave no numeric guidance for the fourth quarter in its update. It said deliveries will depend on demand, supply chain readiness and how many vehicles it keeps for its own fleet, and that production has begun for Tesla Semi in Nevada and Optimus, its humanoid robot, in Fremont. The next report will show whether battery supply lets vehicle output catch up with the backlog Tesla described. [1]

The quarterly report also says Tesla's board has formed a special committee of disinterested directors to explore deepening Tesla's relationship with SpaceX, which could include a business combination. Tesla said there is no assurance that any such transaction will happen. Because the SpaceX stake already moves Tesla's net income each quarter, readers may want to watch both. [2]

How these figures were made: inputs come from Tesla's third quarter 2026 update and quarterly report on SEC EDGAR, the dated closing price and the dated consensus report named above. Calculations use unrounded inputs and are rounded only at the end, with multiples to one decimal and per share figures and prices to the cent. [1][2][3][4]
