Alphabet third quarter 2026 earnings explained: segments, EPS and valuation multiples
Alphabet earned $26,170 million for its common stockholders on $127,577 million of revenue in the quarter ended September 30, 2026. Here is how its segments did, what its EPS looks like and what its valuation multiples show.
Alphabet reported its third quarter 2026 results on October 28, 2026. Revenue for the three months ended September 30 rose 6.5% from the quarter before (Dalsna Finance calculation) and operating income was almost level, but GAAP net income fell sharply because of swings in the value of shares Alphabet holds in other companies. This article walks through what Alphabet does, how each part of the business performed and what the numbers say about its valuation. Every figure is sourced and dated, and every number worked out by us is labelled as a Dalsna Finance calculation. [1][2]
Alphabet in brief
Alphabet Inc. is the parent company of Google. It is best known for Google Search and YouTube, and it also sells cloud computing to businesses through Google Cloud. Its Class A shares trade on the Nasdaq under the ticker GOOGL and its Class C shares under GOOG. The two classes carry the same rights except for voting. Alphabet had 204,757 employees at the end of the quarter. [1][3]
In the release, chief executive Sundar Pichai said the Gemini app has reached one billion users and that YouTube Music and Premium passed 150 million subscribers globally, counting trials. He said Alphabet's first party model APIs now process nearly 32 billion tokens per minute, more than four times the level of a year earlier. These are the company's own figures, as stated in its release. [1]
Three segments
Alphabet reports three segments. Google Services covers Search, YouTube, Android, Chrome, Google Maps, Google Play and consumer devices such as Pixel phones. It earns most of its money from advertising, plus subscriptions such as YouTube TV, YouTube Music and Premium, NFL Sunday Ticket and Google One. Google Cloud sells computing infrastructure and platform services, Google Workspace and other services to businesses, and its product revenue comes mainly from selling TPU systems. Other Bets groups smaller businesses, with revenue mainly from autonomous transportation services and internet services. [1][3]
Some costs are not charged to any segment. Alphabet calls them Alphabet level activities, and they are mainly shared AI research and development on its general AI models, plus corporate costs such as finance, legal and philanthropy. They came to $7,655 million in the third quarter against $5,789 million in the second. Hedging gains on revenue are also kept outside the segments. [1][2]
Google Cloud did most of the growing. Its revenue rose to $30,709 million from $24,768 million in the second quarter, and its operating income rose to $11,121 million from $8,814 million. Against the third quarter of 2025 Cloud revenue more than doubled, which Alphabet reported as growth of 103%. "Google Cloud revenues grew 103%, powered by huge demand for our AI infrastructure and AI solutions," Pichai said in the release. The quarterly report says the growth came mainly from Google Cloud Platform, largely infrastructure and platform services, and from TPU system sales. [1][2][3]

As reported by Alphabet in its second and third quarter 2026 earnings releases. Operating income is income from operations. Alphabet level activities are costs not charged to any segment. [1][2]
Where Google Services revenue comes from
Inside Google Services, Search and other was $63,350 million in the third quarter, about level with the second, and Alphabet said it grew 12% from a year earlier. YouTube ads brought in $11,207 million. Subscriptions, platforms and devices grew fastest from the second quarter, by $1,379 million (Dalsna Finance calculation). The quarterly report puts the rise from a year earlier down mainly to paid subscriptions across YouTube services and Google One, and to more sales of Pixel devices. [1][2][3]
| Revenue line | Q2 2026 | Q3 2026 | Change | Change (%) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Search and other | 63,271 | 63,350 | Up 79 | Up 0.1% |
| YouTube ads | 11,055 | 11,207 | Up 152 | Up 1.4% |

| Google Services total | 94,540 | 96,302 | Up 1,762 | Up 1.9% |
Revenue as reported by Alphabet in its second and third quarter 2026 earnings releases. The two change columns are a Dalsna Finance calculation: Change is Q3 2026 minus Q2 2026, and Change (%) is that change divided by the Q2 2026 figure, times 100, rounded to one decimal at the end. [1][2]
The numbers, quarter over quarter
Revenue was $127,577 million in the third quarter, against $119,796 million in the second. Gross profit, which is revenue minus the direct cost of what was sold, rose 3.1% to $76,158 million. Operating income, which also takes off research, selling and administrative costs, slipped to $40,576 million from $40,770 million. Net income under GAAP, the standard US accounting rules, fell to $26,468 million from $112,193 million (Dalsna Finance calculation for gross profit and the changes). [1][2]
Since June 2026 Alphabet also has preferred stock, and its dividends come out before common stockholders are paid. Net income available to common stockholders, the figure behind EPS, was $26,170 million in the third quarter and $112,107 million in the second. Profit margin is that figure as a share of revenue: 20.5% in the third quarter against 93.6% in the second (Dalsna Finance calculation: $26,170 million divided by $127,577 million, and $112,107 million divided by $119,796 million). The operating margin, operating income divided by revenue, was 31.8% against 34.0%. [1][2][3]
The fall in net income came from below the operating line. In the second quarter other income was a net gain of $97,983 million, which Alphabet said was mainly net unrealized gains on its equity securities. Unrealized means the holdings rose in value but were not sold. In the third quarter other income turned into a net loss of $8,221 million, including an $8,664 million loss on equity securities. The quarterly report puts the fall in other income from a year earlier down mainly to net unrealized losses on marketable equity securities, largely SpaceX, and smaller unrealized gains on private holdings. Alphabet said the loss cut net income by $6.7 billion and diluted EPS by $0.55 after its effect on taxes. [1][2][3]
Against the third quarter of 2025, revenue was up 24.7% from $102,346 million, which Alphabet rounds to 25%, and net income available to common stockholders was down 25.2% from $34,979 million (Dalsna Finance calculation). [1]
| Measure | Q2 2026 | Q3 2026 | Change | Change (%) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | 119,796 | 127,577 | Up 7,781 | Up 6.5% |
| Gross profit | 73,853 | 76,158 | Up 2,305 | Up 3.1% |
| Operating income | 40,770 | 40,576 | Down 194 | Down 0.5% |
| Other income (expense), net | 97,983 | Loss of 8,221 | Down 106,204 | Down 108.4% |
| Net income (GAAP) | 112,193 | 26,468 | Down 85,725 | Down 76.4% |
| Net income available to common stockholders | 112,107 | 26,170 | Down 85,937 | Down 76.7% |
| Free cash flow (non GAAP) | Outflow of 5,855 | Outflow of 9,065 | Down 3,210 | Not meaningful |
| Profit margin (net income available to common stockholders divided by revenue) | 93.6% | 20.5% | Down 73.1 points | Not meaningful |
| Operating margin (operating income divided by revenue) | 34.0% | 31.8% | Down 2.2 points | Not meaningful |
| Weighted average diluted shares (millions) | 12,309 | 12,368 | Up 59 | Up 0.5% |
As reported by Alphabet, except gross profit (revenue minus cost of revenues as reported), the two margin rows and the two change columns, which are a Dalsna Finance calculation. Change is Q3 2026 minus Q2 2026 in the row's own unit, in percentage points for the margin rows. Change (%) is that change divided by the Q2 2026 figure, times 100. Both are worked from the figures as filed and rounded only at the end. Change (%) is not meaningful for free cash flow, as Q2 2026 was an outflow and a percentage of a negative base means nothing, or for the margin rows, which are already percentages. [1][2]
Earnings per share
Earnings per share, or EPS, is profit divided by the number of shares. The diluted figure also counts shares that could be created from stock awards and similar instruments. Alphabet reported diluted EPS of $2.12 for the third quarter and $9.11 for the second. Dividing net income available to common stockholders by the diluted share count gives the same figures. [1][2]
Alphabet reports no adjusted net income and no adjusted EPS. Its own non GAAP measures are free cash flow and constant currency revenue. Free cash flow is the cash its operations brought in minus what it spent on property and equipment, such as data centers and servers. In the third quarter operations brought in $42,290 million and purchases of property and equipment were $51,355 million, an outflow of $9,065 million. So this article uses free cash flow as its second measure and calls it by that name. Per share, on the 12,294 million shares on the cover of the latest quarterly report, it was an outflow of $0.74 in the third quarter and $0.48 in the second (Dalsna Finance calculation). It is a cash measure, not earnings. It turned negative as purchases of property and equipment, which the quarterly report ties mainly to investment in technical infrastructure, outgrew the cash from operations. [1][2][3]

What the market values Alphabet at
Market capitalization, or market cap, is what the stock market values the whole company at: the share price times the number of shares. Alphabet's Class A shares closed at $279.84 on Friday, October 30, 2026, as reported by StockAnalysis. The cover of its third quarter report to the SEC lists 12,294 million shares of Class A, Class B and Class C stock outstanding as of October 21, 2026. Counting all three classes at the Class A price gives a market cap of about $3.44 trillion (Dalsna Finance calculation). Class C shares trade at their own price and Class B shares are not listed, so this is an approximation. The preferred stock is not counted. Every multiple and share price below uses this one share count. [4][3]
- Closing price of $279.84 for Class A shares on October 30, 2026, as reported by StockAnalysis
- Times 12,294 million Class A, Class B and Class C shares, all counted at the Class A price
Market cap of about $3,440.4 billion, or about $3.44 trillion
Dalsna Finance calculation, rounded at the end. The multiples below divide the unrounded market cap. [4][3]
Six valuation multiples
The price to earnings ratio, or P/E, is market cap divided by a year of earnings. It shows how many dollars the market is paying for each dollar of yearly profit. Annualised means one quarter multiplied by four. On that basis Alphabet has a P/E of 32.9 (Dalsna Finance calculation: $3,440.4 billion divided by $26,170 million times 4, which is $104,680 million). [1][4][3]
The second measure divides market cap by free cash flow. We call it market cap to free cash flow, because free cash flow is not earnings. On the third quarter annualised it is not meaningful, because the quarter's free cash flow was an outflow, and dividing by a negative number says nothing about how expensive the shares are. [1]
A forward P/E uses an estimate of future earnings. Barchart reported on October 21, 2026, before the results, that analysts expect EPS of $20.60 for the current year, 2026. Multiplying that by the same 12,294 million shares gives estimated earnings of about $253,256 million and a forward P/E of 13.6 (Dalsna Finance calculation on an estimate, analyst consensus as reported by Barchart). Two of the four quarters in that year were already reported when the estimate was made, and they include the large gains on equity securities, so this forward P/E leans on past gains more than a forward P/E usually does. We found no published estimate of free cash flow, so there is no forward market cap to free cash flow. [5][4][3]
A trailing P/E, sometimes called a historical P/E, uses the last four reported quarters. Net income available to common stockholders over the twelve months to September 30, 2026 added up to $235,310 million, which gives a trailing P/E of 14.6 (Dalsna Finance calculation). It is low next to the annualised P/E because the first half of 2026 included $135,699 million of other income, mostly gains on equity securities. Alphabet reports trailing free cash flow of $19,747 million, which gives a trailing market cap to free cash flow of 174.2 (Dalsna Finance calculation). [1][2][6][4][3]
- Third quarter 2026 net income available to common stockholders of $26,170 million times 4 is $104,680 million
- Market cap of $3,440.4 billion divided by $104,680 million
Annualised P/E of 32.9
Dalsna Finance calculation, using the unrounded market cap and rounded to one decimal. [1][4][3]
- Third quarter 2026 free cash flow was an outflow of $9,065 million, so four times it is an outflow too
- Market cap divided by a negative number says nothing about how expensive the shares are
Market cap to annualised free cash flow not meaningful
Dalsna Finance calculation. Free cash flow is a non GAAP measure, not earnings. [1]
- Analyst consensus EPS for 2026 of $20.60, an estimate as reported by Barchart on October 21, 2026
- Times 12,294 million shares is about $253,256 million of estimated earnings
- Market cap of $3,440.4 billion divided by $253,256 million

The last four quarters
Alphabet reports free cash flow for each of the last four quarters in its third quarter release. Net income for the first quarter of 2026 is not in the releases used here on its own, so it is worked out by subtracting the second quarter from the first half of 2026, both from the second quarter release (Dalsna Finance calculation). Alphabet had no preferred stock in the fourth quarter of 2025 or the first quarter of 2026, so net income in those quarters is all available to common stockholders. [1][2][6][3]
| Quarter | Net income available to common stockholders (GAAP) | Free cash flow (non GAAP) |
|---|---|---|
| Q4 2025 | 34,455 | 24,551 |
| Q1 2026 (net income worked out) | 62,578 | 10,116 |

| Q3 2026 | 26,170 | Outflow of 9,065 |
As reported by Alphabet, except the Q1 2026 net income bar, which is a Dalsna Finance calculation as in the table above. The four quarter total is not charted. [6][2][1]
Two base cases: the third quarter held flat for a year
Suppose revenue stayed at the third quarter's level for a full year, with no growth and no decline: $127,577 million times 4, or $510,308 million. In the release Pichai said Alphabet is now on a half trillion dollar revenue run rate (a paraphrase that keeps his words and drops a hyphen), which is the same idea. The first base case keeps the 20.5% profit margin, which gives earnings of $104,680 million, or $8.51 per share on the cover share count. This case is simply the latest quarter annualised, so at the annualised P/E it returns the October 30, 2026 close of $279.84 by construction. The other cells only show how the price moves when the same earnings are given a different multiple. [1][4][3]
Third quarter net income was pulled down by items below the operating line, mainly the $8,664 million loss on equity securities, and the second quarter was lifted by gains of the same kind. So the second base case uses the 31.8% operating margin, which leaves out interest, taxes and other income altogether: $162,304 million a year, or $13.20 per share. Operating income is counted before tax, so this is not net income. We found no one time item inside third quarter operating income that Alphabet put a figure on, so nothing else is taken out. [1][3]
There is no free cash flow base case. The third quarter's free cash flow was an outflow, so held for a year it stays negative and no multiple can turn it into a share price. The P/E multiples apply to both earnings rows. The market cap to free cash flow multiples do not apply to earnings, so they are left off the grid. [1]

What to watch
Alphabet gave no numeric guidance for the fourth quarter in its release. Purchases of property and equipment were $51,355 million in the third quarter, up from $44,924 million in the second, and free cash flow has been an outflow for two quarters in a row. The next report will show whether operating cash catches up with that spending. [1]
Alphabet is also raising money. In the third quarter it sold 12 million Class A shares for net proceeds of $4.3 billion and 24 million Class C shares for net proceeds of $8.1 billion through its at the market program, and issued senior unsecured notes for net proceeds of $28.7 billion. Its mandatory convertible preferred stock will convert into Class A and Class C shares, and the quarterly report says that and further share sales could dilute existing stockholders. Because its equity holdings, including SpaceX, move net income from quarter to quarter, readers may want to watch other income as closely as operating income. [1][3]
How these figures were made: inputs come from Alphabet's earnings releases for the fourth quarter of 2025 and the second and third quarters of 2026 and its third quarter 2026 quarterly report on SEC EDGAR, plus the dated closing price and the dated consensus report named above. Calculations use unrounded inputs and are rounded only at the end, with multiples to one decimal and per share figures and prices to the cent. [1][3][2][6][4][5]
