Airbnb vs the Consumer Discretionary sector and the S&P 500
Airbnb's latest reported figures next to the median of the other 46 S&P 500 Consumer Discretionary companies and of the other 502 S&P 500 companies; each median is taken over the companies with a comparable figure (counts in the footnote). A median is the middle value, not an average, so one very large company does not move it.
Airbnb compared with the median Consumer Discretionary company and the median S&P 500 company
Airbnb: fiscal year ended December 2025, from its 10-K and 10-Q filings with the SEC. Medians computed October 20, 2026 from each company's latest annual filing (fiscal years ending between July 2025 and September 2026) and our price archive. Prices for every company, Airbnb included, are the last regular-session prices of October 20, 2026; the 1-year change compares that price with each company's last close on or before October 20, 2025. Net margin and price change are our calculations from reported figures. Each median counts only the companies with a comparable figure (sector / S&P 500): revenue growth 46/496, net margin 46/496, 1-year price change 46/488; the reasons below can overlap. 14 are left out of the price figure because our archive holds no comparable close for them. The S&P 500 price figure is the middle company's change, not the index's return.

Revenue by region, 2025: The 10-K breaks revenue down by region: North America $5,196 million (2024: $5,006 million), Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) $4,729 million (2024: $4,135 million), Latin America $1,160 million (2024: $969 million) and Asia Pacific $1,156 million (2024: $992 million) (10-K, Management's Discussion and Analysis).1
Revenue by geography, 2023 to 2025: Based on the location of the host's listing, United States revenue was $4,814 million in 2025, $4,640 million in 2024 and $4,290 million in 2023, and international revenue was $7,427 million, $6,462 million and $5,627 million. No individual international country represented 10% or more of total revenue in any of those years (10-K, Segment and Geographic Information).2
Revenue by region, second quarter of 2026: For the quarter ended June 30, 2026 (unaudited), revenue by listing region was North America $1,594 million (2025: $1,377 million), EMEA $1,425 million (2025: $1,233 million), Latin America $291 million (2025: $231 million) and Asia Pacific $298 million (2025: $255 million) (10-Q).3
Risks
Competition: The 10-K says the business and industry in which Airbnb participates are highly competitive. It names online travel agencies such as Booking Holdings (including Booking.com) and Expedia Group (including Expedia and VRBO), hotel chains such as Marriott, Hilton, Accor and Wyndham, and experiences platforms such as Viator, GetYourGuide and Klook (10-K).1
Short-term rental regulation: Airbnb says certain cities have passed onerous restrictions on short-term rentals, and that New York City passed regulations in 2023 which resulted in a de facto ban of short-term rental activities. Among its risk factors the 10-K lists compliance with a wide range of laws, including short-term rental and consumer protection rules, and the regulation of payments (10-K, Items 1 and 1A).1
Travel demand and growth: The 10-K says Airbnb may not be able to sustain its revenue growth rate, and that any decline or disruption in the travel and hospitality industries or an economic downturn could hurt its business (10-K, Item 1A).1
Conflict in the Middle East: Airbnb's 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 says the conflict in the Middle East has had and may continue to have an impact on booking trends (10-Q).3
Taxes: The 10-K says Airbnb may have exposure to greater than anticipated income tax liabilities. It describes an IRS Statutory Notice of Deficiency, relating to the valuation of its international intellectual property in 2013, which claims Airbnb owes $1.3 billion in tax, plus penalties and interest; in July 2024 Airbnb petitioned the U.S. Tax Court for redetermination. It also describes tax settlements agreed in Italy by Airbnb Ireland (10-K, Item 1A).1
Currency and seasonality: The 10-K says approximately 56% of Airbnb's revenue in 2025 was in non-U.S. dollar currencies, and that it uses a foreign exchange cash flow hedging program to reduce the impact of currency fluctuations on its revenue. Its business is also seasonal, with the peak travel season occurring in the third quarter across North America and EMEA (10-K, Item 1A).1
Trust, safety and data: The 10-K lists risks from fraud and misconduct by users, cybersecurity and data privacy, failures of its technology systems, and its use of artificial intelligence and machine learning (10-K, Item 1A).1
