Oats are a minor but actively traded CBOT grain contract (ZO), priced in US cents per bushel. Used primarily for animal feed and human cereals.
Oats are a cereal grain eaten as oatmeal and in breakfast cereals and baked goods, and also used as animal feed, particularly for horses. Their benchmark contract is Oat Futures on the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT), part of CME Group, under the product code ZO. One contract covers 5,000 bushels and is quoted in US cents per bushel, and the contract is physically deliverable, with set premiums and discounts for different grades.
Oat prices depend mainly on harvests in the major growing countries, so weather during planting and the growing season matters most. The market is smaller and thinner than those for corn or wheat, so prices can move sharply when crop expectations change. Demand from food makers and for feed, the prices of competing grains, import and export flows, and the US dollar also play a part.
