American Electric Power vs the Utilities sector and the S&P 500
American Electric Power's latest reported figures next to the median of the other 30 S&P 500 Utilities companies and of the other 502 S&P 500 companies; each median is taken over the companies with a comparable figure (counts in the footnote). A median is the middle value, not an average, so one very large company does not move it.
American Electric Power compared with the median Utilities company and the median S&P 500 company
American Electric Power: fiscal year ended December 2025, from its 10-K and 10-Q filings with the SEC. Medians computed October 20, 2026 from each company's latest annual filing (fiscal years ending between July 2025 and September 2026) and our price archive. Prices for every company, American Electric Power included, are the last regular-session prices of October 19, 2026; the 1-year change compares that price with each company's last close on or before October 20, 2025. Net margin and price change are our calculations from reported figures. Each median counts only the companies with a comparable figure (sector / S&P 500): revenue growth 30/496, net margin 30/496, dividend per share 28/349, 1-year price change 30/490; the reasons below can overlap. 12 are left out of the price figure because our archive holds no comparable close for them; dividend medians are among the 28 sector and 349 S&P 500 companies reporting a per-share dividend. The S&P 500 price figure is the middle company's change, not the index's return.

Risks
Rate and regulatory proceedings: The 10-K's rate matters note says AEP's registrant subsidiaries are involved in rate and regulatory proceedings at the FERC and their state commissions, and that rate matters can have a material impact on net income, cash flows and possibly financial condition. The note covers proceedings for AEP Texas, APCo and WPCo, I&M, KPCo, OPCo, PSO, SWEPCo and FERC transmission matters (10-K, Rate Matters note).23
Legal, environmental and nuclear contingencies: The 10-K says the registrants are subject to certain claims and legal actions arising in the ordinary course of business. Its contingencies note also describes the Federal EPA's revised coal combustion residuals (CCR) rule, Superfund and state remediation, indemnification claims by owners of the Gavin Power Station, and nuclear contingencies that apply to AEP and I&M (10-K, Commitments, Guarantees and Contingencies note).24
Large capital program and financing: AEP cited a five-year, $78 billion capital plan in its July 30, 2026 release. Long-term debt was $47,987 million at June 30, 2026 (10-Q). Under forward sale agreements entered into in May 2026, AEP receives proceeds only if it elects physical settlement, and its Form 8-K says the forward purchasers can accelerate settlement in specified cases, which could require it to issue shares regardless of its capital needs, resulting in dilution.11
Load growth and new projects: AEP said on July 30, 2026 that total contracted load growth through 2030 had reached 69 GW, and that it had secured approximately 13 GW of gas-fired turbine capacity for potential deployment through 2031. Its January 2026 fuel cell purchase of approximately $2.65 billion is tied to a 20-year offtake agreement that was subject to conditions AEP expected to be met by the second quarter of 2026; if they are not met, the 8-K says AEP will be financially compensated for all capital and costs incurred (Form 8-K).10
Cybersecurity: The 10-K describes a cybersecurity program designed to identify, assess and manage risks from cybersecurity threats, including those posed by third parties. AEP's Board of Directors oversees the program through its Technology Committee, and day-to-day oversight is led by a Senior Vice President who reports to the Chief Executive Officer (10-K, Item 1C).25
Impairments: In the fourth quarter of 2025 AEP recorded a $66 million charge in Asset Impairments and Other Related Charges after an in-process project to replace a legacy enterprise system was no longer probable of completion (10-K, Acquisitions, Dispositions and Impairments note).6
